The public consultation period for the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway (SLNCR) Greenway project has been extended, allowing additional time for local communities, landowners, and stakeholders to provide their feedback on the emerging proposals.

The new deadline for submissions is Tuesday, June 3, and all relevant information can be accessed via the project website at www.slncr-greenway.com.

This extension follows a successful series of in-person consultation events held last week in Sligo, Dromahair and Belcoo. Over 175 people attended these sessions, engaging directly with the project team and offering valuable insights.

Brendan McKenna from Leitrim County Council, senior executive engineer to the project said: "The emerging preferred corridor has now been published for the greenway. It sets out the area where the preferred route is likely to be. It is important we hear from local communities and landowners as their insight is invaluable to help inform the design.

"Last week we had important and engaging conversations. Local people told us about their land and communities – the history, stories and even folklore. We heard everything from farm operations, contours of the land, recreational use, how people live in their homes, link with neighbours and movement of water, wildlife and traffic.

"We ask everyone to share their views with us via the website or with the project liaison officers out on the ground before June 3."

The SLNCR Greenway is a proposed 75km off-road route that will follow the alignment of the former railway line, linking towns and villages across the region. Once completed, the greenway will offer a safe and scenic corridor for both walkers and cyclists, encouraging sustainable travel and boosting tourism across Sligo, Leitrim and the border counties.

The current stage of consultation marks Phase 3 of public engagement, with the publication of the Emerging Preferred Corridor.
