Planning permission has been granted for a £17m Civic and Regional Hub project in Newry, County Down.
The hub forms part of the wider Newry City Centre Regeneration (NCCR) programme of works, backed by the Belfast City Deal, which includes a 15 acre park, a theatre and a road bypass.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Philip Campbell, said the decision marked "a step forward in revitalising the historic heart of Newry and positioning the city as a confident, dynamic destination for people, business and culture,” while also noting the project was a “once-in-a-generation investment."
Cllr Campbell added: "Once on site, the Newry City Centre Regeneration projects will create a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled jobs in the construction industry — supporting local employment and skills development. Local suppliers and service providers will also benefit through contracts and support services.
"Beyond the construction phase, the regeneration programme will lead to sustainable long-term job creation across multiple sectors including retail, hospitality, the creative industries and public services."
