A County Limerick-based boxing club has officially reopened following an investment of over €430,000 to improve its facilities.
Limerick City and County Council's Regeneration, Sport and Recreation Directorate co-ordinated the works with local firms Carr Architects leading the design team and contractor PBC Ltd. completing the works in 2024.
The project, which was funded by the Economic and Social Intervention Fund (ESIF), saw an extensive overhaul of the Southside Boxing Academy facility, which is located in Galvone Industrial Estate.
The removal of a partition on site has opened significant space, allowing the installation of a second boxing ring and accompanying training area. A new heating system, emergency doors and lighting complement the building while upgrades to the dressing room area and toilet blocks provide improved facilities for boxers, trainers and visitors.
Officially re-opening Southside Boxing Academy, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, hailed the facility as "one of the finest boxing facilities in the country".
Minister O’Donovan commented: "The transformation of Southside Boxing Academy shows the power of targeted investment in our communities. The €430,000 provided through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund has revitalised this important facility and created a space where young people can thrive. This is exactly the kind of regeneration that delivers real, lasting impact, supporting health, inclusion, and opportunity."
