A vital infrastructure project is set to get underway in Knockdrin, Co Westmeath, as Uisce Éireann prepares to implement extensive water main replacement works.
The initiative, crucial for enhancing the local water supply's dependability and substantially curbing high leakage rates, will see Shareridge carrying out the construction.
The undertaking involves the renewal of more than two kilometres of dated and vulnerable water mains. Specific areas targeted for this upgrade include sections within Knockdrin Estate and along the R394 at Ballynagall and Monilea.
Site operations are projected to begin in mid-July 2025. Shareridge will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion projected by Autumn 2025.
This project forms a strategic component of a broader effort to modernise Westmeath’s water network. In recent years, the county has already benefited from upgrades to over 30 kilometres of water mains. The national Leakage Reduction Programme, under which these works fall, is pivotal in strengthening supply security, diminishing water loss, and promoting a more sustainable water system across the county. Westmeath is currently experiencing considerable investment in its water and wastewater services infrastructure.
Dave Murphy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "I have witnessed firsthand how our efforts to address leakage have directly benefited residents and businesses in Westmeath. We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient, and we will ensure that our crews make every effort to minimise disruption to the local community. The long-term benefits of this work — including fewer bursts, and a stronger, more dependable water supply — will be felt for years to come."
The scope also extends to installing new water service connections from the public water main to individual property boundaries. Crucially, any existing lead connections on the public side will also be replaced, ensuring a safer and more resilient supply.
