A £1.6m major base maintenance programme at North Coast Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) has successfully been completed ahead of this month's 153rd Open Championship golfing event at Royal Portrush.

NI Water and its project team from RPS and BSG Civil Engineering commenced works to refurbish the treatment processes at the Roselick Road site in early 2024 to ensure completion in time for the major tourist attraction, guaranteeing the key piece of wastewater infrastructure is equipped to cope with the substantial increase in flows generated by the influx of visitors to the area.

Speaking about the improvements, Derek Crabbe, NI Water Senior Project Manager, said: "North Coast WwTW can experience vast fluctuations in flows between winter and summer periods, and with so many events on the cards this year, we wanted to ensure that the treatment processes were playing off scratch and the plant continues to maintain compliance."

Derek added: "I'd like to pay tribute to our northern region WwTW base maintenance team for completing the work ahead of schedule and thank our operational colleagues for their assistance throughout many months of refurbishment works. The investment made will not only support the area's thriving tourism scene but will also ensure that the treatment works serves local residents and businesses for many years to come."
