Carey Building Contractors has been awarded the contract by Galway City Council to construct a new Day Centre and Temporary Emergency Homeless Accommodation at Seamus Quirke Road, Westside, following a tender process in Q1 2025.

The project, forming part of the Galway City Council Housing for All Action Plan, involves the demolition of the existing Teach Corrib Day Centre, which is no longer fit for purpose. It will be replaced with a modern, energy-efficient facility offering enhanced Day Centre services and ten flexible-use units for Temporary Emergency Homeless Accommodation.

Construction is scheduled to begin in Q3 2025. The development will deliver an upgraded facility capable of operating year-round, with additional capacity during the winter months. The aim is to improve support for people experiencing homelessness, with services focused on progressing individuals out of rough sleeping. Completion is expected in Q1 2027.

The contract was signed at City Hall yesterday (July 22) appointing Carey Building Contractors as the main contractor. The project’s Design Team is led by Simon J Kelly Architects.

Speaking at the contract signing, Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive, Galway City Council said: "I'm delighted to see this first step to progress vital infrastructure for a vulnerable segment of society, with the contract signing for the construction of the new Day Centre and temporary homeless accommodation in Westside. This initiative will enhance infrastructure, improve facilities, and strengthen the support provided by multiple agencies supporting homeless men and women in our city."
