National utility company Uisce Éireann, Northern Ireland-headquartered Farrans Construction and Larsen Water Management have collectively saved 150,000 litres of water daily in Letterkenny, County Donegal, by successfully repairing a major leak.
The significant leak, at Main Street, Letterkenny, was repaired under Uisce Éireann's Leakage Reduction Programme with enough water now saved as a result to supply 1,300 people a day.
An extensive review of the network was carried out under the Find & Fix scheme, which involves leak detection crews undertaking surveys using multiple technologies, including sounding equipment, to locate leaks on the water network. Advanced acoustic logging technology was also deployed in Letterkenny which led to this leak being pinpointed within a short time period.
Patricia Lowry, Leakage Reduction Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, described the find as "one of the most significant savings of our precious resource this year in the North-West region."
Patricia continued: "It's hard to understand that more than 150,000 litres of clean drinking water were disappearing underground every day in the centre of Letterkenny. Water is a valuable resource, so finding this leak and successfully repairing it was of paramount importance. For our leak detection team to have found this leak and the subsequent improvement to the network is a massive win."
