Sligo County Council is continuing to advance the N17 Knock to Collooney [Atlantic Economic Corridor] Project through Phase 3: Design and Environmental Evaluation, in line with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Project Management Guidelines.
Phase 3 involves progressing the design of the Preferred Option to a detailed level, enabling the identification of land requirements, assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts, and preparation for the statutory consent process.
In 2024, Phase 3 activities were limited by a Ministerial funding condition to the Tobercurry and Charlestown Bypass sections. During that time, topographic and hydrographic surveys, along with LiDAR assessments, were carried out on those sections.
Following the 2025 TII grant allocations issued on March 25, 2025, these restrictions no longer apply. Sligo County Council is now progressing Phase 3 along the full preferred corridor from Ireland West Airport Knock to Collooney. The project corridor is available to view here.
Survey works for the remaining sections—specifically from Ireland West Airport Knock to Charlestown and from north of Tobercurry to Collooney—are scheduled to begin in Q4 2025. These works will include topographic and hydrographic surveys, along with LiDAR data collection.
To support both Phase 3 and the upcoming Phase 4 (Statutory Consent), the council will appoint a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm. The procurement process is ongoing through Q3 and Q4 2025, with contract award targeted for Q1 2026, subject to TII approvals and funding availability.
Sligo County Council will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and appreciates the continued cooperation of the local community as we work to deliver this key infrastructure for the northwest.
