Ward and Burke Construction Ltd, working on behalf of Iarnród Éireann, has completed a 13-month project to improve accessibility at Rathmore Station in County Kerry.

The works included the provision of a new footbridge over the railway, featuring two 13 person lifts and other improvement works around the station. The project was funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority.

Representatives from Iarnród Éireann's Disability Users Group, local elected representatives and members of the community from Rathmore attended a special event at the station yesterday (August 7) to mark the completion of the accessibility works.

Speaking at the opening of the bridge, Programme Manager for Iarnród Éireann, Colin Grimes said: "This new infrastructure will provide ease of access for generations to come for customers from Rathmore. We are also honoured to be joined by members of our Disability Users Group here today as their input is essential to ensuring that the upgrade works that I and my team undertake provide the best possible solution for persons with reduced mobility."

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Martin Grady, added: "I want to commend the National Transport Authority for providing the funding to bring this project to fruition and the contractors, Ward and Burke, for a high standard finish to the project. I want to take this opportunity to also highlight Iarnród Éireann's existing accessibility features for passengers with disabilities, accessible space on carriages, priority seating, ramps and staff assistance, the footbridge, lifts and upgraded works will complement the existing services in place."

Rathmore is the latest new lift and passenger bridge on the network and follows the opening of Little Island and Banteer last year. Accessibility upgrades are ongoing at five other stations on the network and many more are planned.
