The reconstruction of the embankment on Glenshesk Road in Ballycastle, County Antrim, has been delayed, with the road now expected to remain closed until November 2025.

The scheme, which began on March 18, 2025, was initially scheduled for completion by late summer, but progress has been hindered by challenging ground conditions and the discovery of a large quantity of illegal waste that must be removed from the site.

The road has been closed since March 27, 2024, between the junctions of Glenbank Road and Greenan Road, following a landslide that caused a partial collapse. The severity of the damage and the steep, unstable terrain required significant engineering design before reconstruction could begin, including geotechnical analysis and planning to ensure a safe and practical solution.

Traffic management and diversions remain in place, and additional signage will be installed to support visitors attending The Auld Lammas Fair from August 23 to 26.

Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure has stated that programme dates are indicative and will be updated as work progresses. The road will reopen only once construction is complete and the route is safe for public use.
