Kilrea Bridge on the B64 Bann Road, over the River Bann between counties L’Derry and Antrim, has closed in both directions following structural concerns.
Essential works are being carried out on the retaining wall at the south-west end of the bridge after a recent inspection identified vertical and diagonal cracking in the structure. To ensure the safety of all road users, Northern Ireland’s Department for Infrastructure has closed the road while the retaining wall is assessed and repairs are planned.
The road will remain closed for several weeks while a temporary solution is put in place. Once this stage of work is complete, the bridge will reopen to traffic while a permanent scheme is developed.
Traffic diversions are signposted locally. Drivers are advised to follow the diversion routes and allow extra time for their journey. The Department acknowledges the disruption this will cause but stresses that public safety must take priority.
