NI Water has carried out a significant clean-up operation after a sewer blockage on Killybracken Road in Dungannon, County Tyrone, caused a spill into a local watercourse.
The obstruction was traced to the build-up of wipes, fats, oils and grease in the system. Specialist staff were sent to the site after the issue was reported and heavy duty machinery was required to remove the blockage, which was fully cleared by 9pm on the same day. A clean-up followed, with all sewage-related debris removed from the area.
Contractors then completed a 1,350-metre desilt of the network – the equivalent of 15 football pitches in length – to reduce the risk of future blockages. NI Water confirmed the level of fats, oils and grease within the system made this essential, and that the works represented a significant investment. A CCTV survey is also scheduled to check for any structural defects in the sewer network.
