Uisce Éireann has begun a public consultation on plans to upgrade the Carlow (Mortarstown) Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The proposed works are designed to expand the plant's capacity and modernise its infrastructure to support the growing population and future needs of Carlow Town and the surrounding area.
The project includes increasing the plant's capacity from a population equivalent of 36,000 to 58,000, upgrading the wastewater treatment processes to maintain environmental compliance, and improving water quality in the River Barrow. Construction will also involve enhancements to the existing pumping station at Kilkenny Road and the development of a new pumping station adjacent to the Mortarstown site, connected via a new tunnelled sewer.
Speaking about the project, Paul Fallon, Wastewater Portfolio Delivery Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We have been working on the development of this vital project for Carlow for some time and are pleased to now be in a position to commence consultation. We greatly look forward to meeting with the local community in the coming weeks. The proposed investment will not only deliver on our commitment to provide essential wastewater infrastructure to support the town's future growth but will also bring significant environmental benefits to the area by improving water quality in the River Barrow."
Uisce Éireann is inviting feedback from the public on the proposed works as part of the consultation, which runs until Sunday, October 19, 2025. A public information event will be held at the Seven Oaks Hotel, Athy Road, Carlow on Thursday, October 9, from 4pm to 8pm, where local residents can review project details and ask questions.
