Construction has commenced on Phase 3 of Fernhill Park and Gardens in County Dublin, centred on the Woodland Adventure Playground.
The Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council project delivers an inclusive play space within the mature woodland, featuring two key elements developed with input from local primary schools: a ribbon of agility-play equipment winding through the trees and a nine-metre-high hideaway tower. The design also incorporates a woodland quarry theme to reflect the heritage of the area.
Phase 3 works include the installation of all play structures, pathways, safety surfacing, and landscaping, alongside ancillary improvements such as repairs to stone walls, planting, and installation of new park railings. Public toilets, the sports pavilion, the dog off-leash area, and additional seating have already been completed.
Earlier phases laid the groundwork for Phase 3. Phase 1 included paths in the front meadow, tree surgery, restoration of the Broadwalk, fencing, undergrounding of ESB lines, and construction of a near zero-energy building. Phase 2 delivered vehicular access and car parking, including a signalised junction, shared surface avenue, three parking areas, retaining walls, paths, steps, bridges, a grass pitch with a 400m running track, bicycle parking, seating, signage, and lighting, with all elements now open to the public.
Phase 3 works commenced in September 2025 and remain ongoing, with completion and public opening expected early next year. All construction adheres to the masterplan for Fernhill Park, prioritising minimal intervention with the natural topography, protection of existing habitats, sustainable development, and the use of high-quality local materials and traditional craftsmanship.
