Work has commenced on Phase Two of the Derg Active initiative in Castlederg, with key construction projects planned across four sites: Mitchell Park, the Diamond, Derg Valley Leisure Centre, and Castle Park.
E Quinn Civils from Pomeroy, County Tyrone, Milligan Bros from Ederney, County Fermanagh, and W Doherty Construction Ltd from Strabane, County Tyrone, have been appointed as contractors for the respective sites, with Doran Consulting, GM Design, and ADP acting as lead architects.
Phase Two builds on the infrastructure improvements delivered in Phase One, which included a public realm upgrade at the Diamond, new play facilities and lighting at Castle Park, and improved greenway connectivity at Dergview FC.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, performed the formal turning of the sod in Castlederg to mark the beginning of the next phase of works on the projects.
Mayor McHugh said: "I am absolutely delighted to see work beginning on these eagerly awaited works that will build on the critical community infrastructure improvements of Phase One.
"The completed projects will provide state of the art playing space for GAA and soccer, further progress the green economic recovery of the town and build infrastructure to promote active and healthier lifestyles.
"I look forward to the completion of work on all four sites in the new year and the people of the Derg reaping all the associated benefits of accessing safe and modern facilities on their doorstep."
At Mitchell Park, redevelopment works will include a 3G floodlit games area suitable for competitive soccer, a GAA junior pitch, and mini-sized soccer pitches for youth and recreational play. The scheme also incorporates a coach education room, new pathways, soft and hard landscaping, street furniture, and additional parking. E Quinn Civils is leading the construction, with Doran Consulting as architects.
The Diamond will see an extension of the Phase One public realm improvements to include outer footpaths, additional planters, street furniture, and new pedestrian crossings at two key locations. Milligan Bros are contracted for construction, with GM Design providing architectural services.
At Castle Park, improvements include upgraded secondary pathways, additional street furniture, and enhanced links from the town centre along Park Road. Minor works at the park entrance will explore future public toilet installation. Milligan Bros are delivering this work with GM Design as lead architects.
Derg Valley Leisure Centre will undergo upgrades to the health suite, including an infrared sauna, ice baths, and a refurbished steam room, alongside mechanical and electrical enhancements. W Doherty Construction Ltd is undertaking the construction with ADP as architects.
