Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will begin works on behalf of Uisce Éireann next week to upgrade the water infrastructure along Albert Road in Cork City, as part of the ongoing Cork City South Quays project.
The scheme involves the decommissioning of nearly 700 metres of ageing cast iron water mains and the installation of new, larger modern pipes. The upgrade will increase network capacity to support residential and commercial development in the Docklands area and improve local water quality.
Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, commented on the project: "In a concerted effort to support the growth and development ambitions of this country, Uisce Éireann continues to invest in strengthening the water supply network in Cork City. This project on Albert Road, along with the upgrade works completed on the South Quays earlier this year, will provide additional capacity to support future residential and commercial development in the Docklands area - enabling the city to thrive. As we continue to address water quality and discolouration reports, we are keen to also see the water quality benefits this project will bring as well."
To ensure the works are carried out safely, traffic management will be in place, including a flagmen system, a road closure, and night-time working. Night-time works will commence on September 29 along Monahan Road and Victoria Road, operating Monday to Friday from 7pm to 7am.
A road closure will be in effect along Albert Road from October 6 to 24, Monday to Friday. Emergency access will be maintained at all times, with a clearly signposted diversion route. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2025.
