Glanua, working on behalf of Uisce Éireann, has successfully completed the latest phase of work on the Macroom Water Treatment Plant in County Cork, allowing the Boil Water Notice on the Macroom Public Water Supply to be lifted with immediate effect.
Following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), customers can now resume normal use of the water supply.
The notice, issued on September 12, 2025 due to operational issues at the treatment plant, affected approximately 4,697 customers. Uisce Éireann carried out extensive water sampling and monitoring to ensure the supply met safety standards before lifting the notice.
Operations Manager Niall O'Riordan confirmed that the contractor's work, alongside Uisce Éireann's teams, has been essential in resolving the issue quickly and safely. "Uisce Éireann's primary focus remains the protection of public health and we worked with our stakeholders to thankfully lift the notice in a very timely manner," he said.
The ongoing €6.5 million upgrade of the Macroom Water Treatment Plant, being delivered by Glanua, aims to reduce risks to water quality and prevent the frequent Boil Water Notices experienced in recent years. The upgrade is scheduled for completion in summer 2026 and will provide a more secure and reliable water supply for the local community.
Until the upgrade is complete, the Macroom supply remains at high risk of further Boil Water Notices when operational issues arise. Customers are reminded that water is safe to consume once boiled while notices are in place.
