GMC Utilities Group Ltd is set to begin major water infrastructure works in Rathfarnham next week on behalf of Uisce Éireann, aimed at reducing high levels of leakage and improving the reliability of the local water network.

The project will be delivered in two phases. The first phase involves relocating water mains from Main Street, Rathfarnham Village to Grange Road and installing nearly 800 metres of new mains along R114 Grange Road as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme. This work will replace ageing pipes, reduce bursts and outages, and improve the overall operation of the network.

Nicola Butler, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, highlighted the benefits of the works: "Installing these new pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts and outages on the network, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean water lost into the ground. The works will also improve the operation of the network by reducing the need for frequent repairs to aged watermains, resulting in a positive impact on leakage and the daily lives of residents."

Traffic management will be in place, using a stop/go system to maintain safety and efficiency throughout the works. The first phase is scheduled for completion in November 2025.

This upgrade forms part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing National Leakage Reduction Programme, which continues to deliver improved water quality, a more resilient and sustainable supply, and significant water savings for communities across Ireland.
