The Nordex Group has secured a contract to manufacture and install 12 N133/4.8 onshore turbines for the 58MW Drumnahough Wind Farm in County Donegal, a joint venture between SSE and FuturEnergy Ireland.
SSE Renewables, which is leading construction and delivery, confirmed that pre‑construction activity is under way, with civil engineering works due to start in the coming weeks. The project is located in rural upland Donegal, about 13km from Letterkenny, spanning the townlands of Treankeel, Meenadaura, Carrickalangan and Cark.
Under a long‑term Premium Service agreement, Nordex will also provide ongoing maintenance to support reliable operations once the site is fully commissioned. Delivery of turbine components is planned for early 2027 via Killybegs Harbour, the primary entry point set to support efficient logistics and local supply chain participation. Installation at the wind farm is scheduled to begin later in 2027. Nordex has indicated it will, where feasible, engage local contractors and suppliers during installation and operations, including crane services, electrical finishing works and tooling provision.
The appointment extends the existing relationship between Nordex and SSE Renewables. In 2023, SSE Renewables ordered 29 Nordex turbines for the 101MW Yellow River wind farm in County Offaly, which is now fully operational. Earlier this month, the companies also announced a new order in Spain for two onshore projects totalling 42MW.
Patrick Greene, Construction Projects Director at SSE Renewables, said: "With construction due to begin in the coming weeks, the appointment of the Nordex Group as turbine provider marks a significant milestone in progressing Drumnahough Wind Farm. We value Nordex's commitment to leveraging the local supply chain wherever possible and look forward to collaborating closely with them throughout the construction phase of the project."
Jason Welch, Managing Director UK & Ireland at the Nordex Group, said: "We're pleased to have been awarded the contract to manufacture and install turbines for the Drumnahough wind farm – another important milestone in Ireland's renewable energy journey. With the N133's suitability for high wind locations and our long-term service commitment, at Nordex, we're proud to continue to deliver as a trusted, dependable partner in the Irish onshore sector."
Alongside Nordex's appointment, Sorensen Civil Engineering has been selected for the Civil Balance of Plant (CBoP) scope, and Omexom will deliver the Electrical Balance of Plant (EBoP) contract. The scheme is intended to add new renewable capacity that supports Ireland's Climate Action Plan, helping progress 2030 renewable energy and decarbonisation goals while strengthening the State's security of supply.
