County Longford has reached a significant milestone this week with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage approving €1.875 million to deliver 25 affordable homes at Ard Michael on the Ballinalee Road in Longford Town.
It will be the first affordable housing project to be led by Longford County Council, widening access to home ownership for local households.
Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon, said, "This is a major step forward for people in County Longford who want to own their own home. The new homes at Ard Michael will be high-quality and energy efficient, giving an opportunity to those who want to put down roots and own a home in Longford. I want to acknowledge the work of our Housing team and the support of the Department in progressing this scheme."
Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Garry Murtagh, said, "This is a proud day for County Longford. The approval of these 25 affordable homes marks a new chapter for our county, giving more families the opportunity to build their future here. I want to commend Longford County Council and thank the Department for their support in making home ownership more accessible for our community. We look forward to seeing these homes delivered and welcoming new homeowners to Ard Michael."
Under the Affordable Purchase Scheme, eligible applicants can buy newly built homes at a price below the prevailing market rate.
The council has been allocated €75,000 per home under this scheme, which will help reduce the purchase price for qualifying buyers.
Next steps will include publication of eligibility criteria, pricing information and application timelines, alongside information sessions for prospective applicants.
