Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald MLA has officially launched Open Doors 2026 in Northern Ireland, visiting the Dundonald International Ice Bowl regeneration site to highlight the vast career opportunities within the construction sector.
The initiative, delivered by Build UK in partnership with Construction Futures, will run from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 March 2026. It offers students, jobseekers, and career changers exclusive, pre-booked access to live construction sites, offices, and manufacturing facilities across the region.
This year marks a significant expansion for the programme, as the Department for the Economy has joined as a key partner. Through its Careers Service, the Department will provide impartial advice to help visitors navigate the 180+ different roles available in the modern industry.
The launch comes as the latest CITB Construction Workforce Outlook warns that Northern Ireland must recruit approximately 5,450 additional workers by 2029 to keep pace with demand for housing and infrastructure.
Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald stated: "The Open Doors initiative reflects my commitment to expanding skills training and career opportunities in the construction sector, which is vital to the economy. By showcasing the wide range of careers available, we are encouraging more people to consider construction as a rewarding and sustainable career.
"Working in partnership with industry helps to ensure our skills system is inclusive, responsive to future needs, and supports the growth of the economy."
Following the success of the inaugural Northern Ireland event in 2025—which saw over 500 visitors across 18 locations—industry leaders are eager to showcase the "technology-driven" nature of modern builds. Data from previous years shows that 88% of visitors were more likely to consider a construction career after their site visit.
Fionnuala McKenna, Head of Strategic Development at Construction Futures, added: "Open Doors is a fantastic opportunity to see what it's really like to work in construction. There really is a role for everyone, whether hands-on or office-based, and planting that seed early allows people to see careers they may never have considered."
Mark Spence, Chief Executive of the Construction Employers Federation (CEF), concluded:
"Open Doors provides the perfect platform for young people and career changers to see just how broad, innovative, and technology-driven the modern industry is."
