Plans for the new Strabane Leisure Centre are moving forward as the project enters the detailed design stage, Council members were told at a Special meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
The development forms a key part of the wider £115 million Canal Basin regeneration initiative. Council members were informed that the facility mix has been expanded to reflect community feedback gathered during a public consultation in mid-2024, which involved over 700 participants.
ESC Construction Consultants, appointed in July 2025, are currently reviewing concept designs. The project is also pursuing Passivhaus accreditation, incorporating net-zero principles to reduce the building’s carbon footprint.
Statutory pre-planning engagement is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with a target opening in the 2029/30 financial year, subject to approvals.
The design has been revised to include an 8-lane 25m main pool, upgraded from the original 6-lane concept, dedicated squash facilities, a state-of-the-art fitness suite, wellness spa, and a separate leisure/teaching pool. A split-level entrance has been designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding Canal Basin.
The total capital budget for the leisure centre is currently estimated at approximately £42 million, contributing to the broader Canal Basin redevelopment supported by the City Deal, the Inclusive Future Fund, and Council investment.
Council members approved the proposed facility mix, the assessed capital budget, and the next steps for the project, including the planned acquisition of the DfI building and the commencement of site clearance. Coordination with City Deal partners and completion of all statutory engagement will continue prior to the submission of a formal planning application.
The project aims to deliver a high-spec, energy-efficient health and wellness hub that meets community needs while enhancing the Canal Basin area.
