Galway West End Water Main Upgrade Moves Ahead

Uisce Éireann will begin the next phase of its West End mains replacement on Monday, 9 February, replacing approximately 100 metres of pipework on Dominick Street Upper over three weeks. A signed diversion will route traffic via William Street West, Sea Road, Fr Griffin Avenue and Fairhill Road Upper, with pedestrian access maintained.

The utility says it is making strong progress on its major programme in Galway City's West End. Crews have been on William Street West for the past four weeks and expect to finish that section by the end of this week.

From Monday, teams will relocate to Dominick Street Upper (L-5103-0) to start the next stage of works. This will see ageing water mains replaced with modern pipes along the stretch from the junction with Dominick Street Lower and Raven Terrace to the junction with Henry Street and William Street West.

The works are scheduled to take three weeks. To safeguard crews, road users and the public, a road closure will be in place for the duration. A road closure licence has been granted by Galway City Council.

During the closure, the diversion will be clearly signposted. Pedestrian access to Dominick Street Upper will be available at all times.

Enda McNamara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, thanked West End residents and businesses for their continued cooperation as the project advances.

"We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by road closures, and the disruption that can be created by works such as these in a city centre location," said Enda.

"We are close to completion on William Street West and we wish to thank the businesses on the street for their patience and understanding while the works were ongoing.

"We will be moving to Dominick Street from next week to continue the next phase of this project, which is providing a more secure and reliable supply of drinking water to homes and businesses in the West End."

All works are being delivered by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
