Fingal County Council has officially started construction on the Seatown Road to Estuary Road Active Travel Scheme in Swords, marked by a sod‑turning attended by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O'Leary, Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly and Director of Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel & Sport, David Storey. The scheme is aimed at improving safety, accessibility and the overall journey experience along this key corridor.
John Cradock Ltd has been appointed main contractor, with works now underway and scheduled to take approximately 12 months. The programme will deliver new cycle lanes on both sides of the road and widen the footpath beneath the bridge to enhance pedestrian safety. In addition, the roundabouts at Swords Business Campus and Estuary Road will be rebuilt to cycle‑friendly designs, with safe pedestrian crossings on all exits to protect vulnerable road users. The improvements are intended to make walking, cycling and wheeling more convenient for everyday trips to schools, sports facilities, shops and workplaces.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O'Leary, stated: "I am delighted to see works begin on this project which will make everyday journeys safer and more enjoyable for people living, working and visiting the area. By improving footpaths, enhancing cycling facilities and calming traffic, we are creating a road environment that better supports families, schoolchildren and our most vulnerable road users."
David Storey, Director of Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel & Sport at Fingal County Council, said: "The commencement of works on the Seatown Road to Estuary Road Active Travel Scheme is an important step in strengthening the sustainable transport network in this part of the county. It advances the wider active travel link between Swords and Malahide, creating a more connected corridor that will serve the community well into the future."
The Seatown Road to Estuary Road scheme forms part of a wider programme of transport infrastructure in Swords this year. Public realm works on North Street and the R132 Connectivity Project between the Lissenhall and Pinnock Hill roundabouts are due to commence next month.
