A £635,000 road improvement scheme is officially underway on the A25 Newry Road in Rathfriland, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed. The project focuses on a 1,450-metre stretch of the carriageway, extending from Grocers Road to the junction with Greenhill Road.
The resurfacing work is designed to significantly bolster the structural integrity and surface quality of this key route. Commenting on the project, Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Rathfriland area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
"This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Rathfriland area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 3 April 2026."
To allow the scheme to be delivered safely, a series of traffic management measures have been put in place. Daily road closures will be in effect from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, during two primary windows: Monday 9 February to Friday 20 February, and again from Monday 9 March to Friday 3 April.
Additionally, a continuous 24-hour closure is scheduled from Monday 23 February to Saturday 7 March to facilitate essential repairs to a verge slippage within the project limits.
A signed diversion will guide traffic via several local routes, including the A25 Downpatrick Street, the B0025 Hilltown Road, and the B8 Newry Road. While the Department for Infrastructure has aimed to minimise disruption, motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys.
Minister Kimmins added: "I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
The project is slated for completion by 3 April 2026, though the timeline remains subject to favourable weather conditions.
