Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is set to move a proposed community trail in Hilltown into the planning process, following approval by the Council's Active and Healthy Communities Committee. The recommendation, which includes appointing a consultant to progress the scheme to planning, will be brought to the full Council for formal ratification next month.

The project is intended to strengthen local connectivity and access to the surrounding countryside, providing safe, off-road walking routes for people of all ages and abilities. The Hilltown trail is designed to encourage participation in physical activity, enhance the amenity of the site and integrate with planned works at Clonduff GAC to deliver a joined-up community asset.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philp Campbell, said: "Investing in community trails produces many benefits for people of all ages.

"Community trails are safe and provide an opportunity for families and residents to improve their health by getting out in the fresh air and exercising. We are very fortunate to have a number of scenic walking trails across the district which are extremely popular."

Cllr Campbell said the Hilltown trail will complement the proposed investment at Clonduff GAC, providing people in the village and visitors with a new community asset.

For the construction sector, the committee's endorsement signals the next procurement step to appoint consultancy support for design development and planning submission. Subject to statutory approvals and full Council ratification, the scheme would open up future delivery opportunities for contractors and the local supply chain as part of ongoing council-led investment in active travel and recreation infrastructure across the district.
