Communities across County Galway are benefiting from a significantly improved water supply this spring following the completion of two major mains replacement projects by Uisce Éireann.
The upgrades, carried out under the National Leakage Reduction Programme, have modernised the infrastructure in both the north and south of the county.
In south Galway, almost 4km of ageing water mains along the N67 have been replaced, providing a more robust service for the people of Ballinderreen, Kilcolgan, and surrounding townlands. Simultaneously, further north, over 3km of old pipes were replaced along the L2111 to strengthen the network serving Caherlistrane and Carheens.
Both projects were delivered by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are designed to reduce the frequency of bursts and operational disruptions that previously impacted the local area.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, said: "These new mains will provide a higher quality of water supply for homes and businesses in these Galway communities. They will also ensure a more reliable supply, reducing the likelihood of bursts and other operational issues on the network moving forward.
"The mains replacement will also help us to progress toward our long-term aim of driving down rates of leakage on our public network, reducing the volume of treated water lost underground through leaks.
"The aim of our Leakage Reduction Programme is to strengthen the network in order to meet growing demand, and to safeguard our precious water supplies in a smart, sustainable way. Projects like the ones recently completed in County Galway are examples of those aims being achieved in a way that deliveries for customers and communities."
Uisce Éireann expressed its gratitude to local residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation while the works were being carried out.
The National Leakage Reduction Programme continues to operate across every county in Ireland, with teams currently performing over 500 network repairs each week. These ongoing infrastructure improvements are part of a broader commitment to supporting sustainable growth and ensuring a secure water supply for the future.
