Staff and pupils at Brookfield Special School in Moira are enjoying enhancements to their Sensory Garden after Power NI – Northern Ireland's leading energy provider – donated £600.
The funding has paid for new equipment to create a calmer, more interactive outdoor space that supports pupils' sensory development, emotional regulation and social interaction, offering tactile, visual and auditory experiences that enrich day-to-day learning.
Sensory gardens are particularly beneficial for children with additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They also serve as an outdoor classroom for lessons and activities that help build social and motor skills in a different environment.
Home to almost 170 children, Brookfield was nominated for Power NI's Helping Hands fund by employee Lauren White. The initiative is part of the company’s long-running commitment to supporting organisations at the heart of local communities.
Mrs Brand, the school's Senior Teacher, said: "We really appreciate support from Power NI to help make our sensory wish list a reality. By investing in projects like Brookfield’s Sensory Garden, Power NI is helping create inclusive, nurturing spaces where children can learn, play and thrive."
