Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has appointed McLaughlin & Harvey to deliver construction works for the redevelopment of Port Ellen Ferry Terminal and its marshalling area on Islay.
The project will modernise the harbour and expand landside infrastructure to meet current and future ferry needs. Plans include substantial land reclamation to create additional marshalling and laydown space for cars and commercial vehicles, alongside redesigned, safer traffic management routes across the port.
A new dedicated ferry berth, compatible with both the forthcoming Islay-class vessels and the existing fleet, will be built with fendering, dredging and bollards. The scheme also includes a new linkspan and fixed ramp, shore power charging infrastructure, and a larger terminal building to improve comfort and resilience for passengers and staff.
Harbour capacity will be boosted with a longer fishing berth and a significantly extended commercial quay, around four times the length of the current structure, with segregated offloading areas to enhance safety and operational flexibility.
Sustainable transport features such as electric vehicle charging bays and bicycle facilities will be incorporated, along with upgraded lighting, CCTV and fencing.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June, following the conclusion of Fèis Ìle at the end of May to minimise disruption during the island’s key festival period. The works are expected to complete in 2029.
CMAL has engaged with Islay residents and businesses since 2022 to ensure the design reflects local needs. With two new vessels increasing capacity on the route, the upgrade will equip Port Ellen to handle growing passenger, car and commercial traffic.
