Limerick City and County Council has officially entered into a construction contract with M Fitzgibbon Contractors Ltd for a upcoming social housing project located at Barnakyle, Patrickswell, Co. Limerick.

The project, which represents an investment of €8.263 million via the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP), received approval through the Part 8 planning process. The development will consist of 24 high-quality residences, featuring a variety of single-storey, dormer, and two-storey designs. The unit breakdown includes 8 two-bedroom houses, 11 three-bedroom houses, and 5 four-bedroom houses, intended to address various housing requirements in the region.

Beyond the housing units, the site will feature new road infrastructure linking to Clarina Road and potential future developments, as well as car parking and footpaths. The scope of works also encompasses hard and soft landscaping, such as street lighting, planting, garden walls, and boundary treatments. Essential utility connections, drainage systems, and water mains are also included in the infrastructure plans.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, stated: "This investment of over €8 million represents a very positive step in addressing housing needs in Patrickswell. The Barnakyle homes will offer high‑quality, modern accommodation for families and individuals, helping to strengthen the community. Together with the Council's recent acquisition of lands in the area, the Barnakyle development demonstrates a co‑ordinated, forward‑looking approach to meeting both current and future housing needs in this growing community."

There is clear demand for housing locally and these 24 new homes will make real difference to families and individuals waiting for suitable accommodation. This development demonstrates our focus on delivering well-designed homes, supported by appropriate infrastructure, in established communities."

Construction is scheduled to begin in the near future, with the project expected to reach completion by the final quarter of 2027.
