Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed a £750,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A2 Warrenpoint Road dual carriageway in Newry will begin on Friday 8 May 2026.
The project covers 2.1 kilometres of the Newry-bound carriageway, running from near the Old Warrenpoint Road junction to Greenbank Road roundabout in Newry.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. This investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Newry area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Monday 25 May 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To facilitate safe delivery, the Newry-bound A2 will be closed continuously between Narrow Water roundabout, Warrenpoint, and Greenbank Road roundabout from 7pm on Friday 8 May to 6am on Monday 11 May; from 7pm on Friday 15 May to 6am on Monday 18 May; and from 7pm on Friday 22 May to 6am on Monday 25 May.
A signed diversion will operate via A2 Warrenpoint Road, A2 Newry Road, A2 Newry St, A2 Church St, B7 Duke St, B7 Upper Dromore Road, B7 Milltown St, B7 Bridge Road, B7 Chapel Hill, B8 Newry Road, B8 Hilltown Road, A25 Rathriland Road, A25 Windsor Hill, A25 Sandys St, A1 Downshire Road, A1 Trevor Hill, A1 Upper Water St, A1 Abbey Way, A1 William St, A2 Kilmorey St, and vice versa.
A temporary 50mph speed limit will apply on the A2 Warrenpoint Road for the duration of the works and overtaking will be prohibited.
