Civil engineering specialist GRAHAM has successfully completed a £3.2m project to deliver a new Wastewater Treatment Works for Monea village, situated just outside Enniskillen. Acting as the principal contractor for NI Water, GRAHAM led the construction of the facility over a two-year period to upgrade local services and provide the capacity required for future regional development.
The new system employs an innovative, nature-based approach to wastewater management. By utilising aerated reed beds to treat effluent, the facility offers a high-standard, low-energy solution that is significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional methods.
Ciaran Moohan, Contracts Manager at GRAHAM, commented on the project's success: "It's fantastic to have supported the delivery of such an important project for NI Water, drawing on our civil engineering team's extensive experience in delivering sustainable wastewater infrastructure across Northern Ireland. Our long-standing relationship with NI Water is built on a shared commitment to quality and environmental responsibility, and this scheme is a strong example of what can be achieved through close collaboration. Together, we've delivered a nature-based solution that meets the needs of the local community today and is designed to support future growth."
The project is expected to yield substantial long-term benefits for the area, particularly regarding the water quality of the Monea River and Lower Lough Erne. By modernising the infrastructure, the project ensures the village is equipped with a facility capable of serving the community for decades.
Martin Armstrong, NI Water Project Manager, said: "NI Water is delighted to complete this new natured based wastewater solution for Monea village, which will support future growth and development in the area, as well as providing key environmental benefits such as enhancing the river water quality in the Monea River and Lower Lough Erne. We at NI Water are pleased to bring this much-needed investment to the village, providing a modern wastewater facility that will serve the area for many years to come."
The scheme was delivered with project management and technical support from RPS Tetratech, working alongside the GRAHAM construction team to meet the specific environmental and engineering requirements of the Fermanagh site.
