EirGrid has supported vital Irish Coast Guard helicopter training exercises off the south coast during the execution of marine surveys for its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project.
The survey operations, which commenced last month (April), represent the next stage of site investigation works and follow the successful completion of an initial phase of surveys conducted in 2025.
During the offshore geophysical survey work, the survey vessel Kommandor Iona—operated by EirGrid's appointed contractor, Fugro—facilitated a series of helicopter winch training exercises at sea. The vessel's captain approved the training requests when operational schedules allowed, acknowledging the necessity of maintaining operational readiness for emergency situations.
The Irish Coast Guard manages a fleet of six AW189 helicopters to provide 24/7 search and rescue alongside nationwide emergency response services. Supported by fixed-wing aircraft, these operations encompass maritime rescues, cliff incidents, air ambulance duties, and emergency medical support. Critical training exercises, including hovering and winching, ensure that crews can safely and efficiently respond to real-life emergencies.
EirGrid welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the value of supporting programmes that enhance the maritime safety capabilities of Ireland, particularly within active coastal locations like Wexford.
Liam Ryan, Chief Transformation, Technology and Offshore Officer at EirGrid, said: "EirGrid is committed to supporting organisations like the Irish Coast Guard wherever possible. Facilitating exercises like these helps ensure crews can train in realistic offshore conditions, strengthening collaboration and preparedness across all those working to keep people safe at sea. This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of EirGrid, Fugro, and the Irish Coast Guard to safety, preparedness, and effective emergency response in Irish waters."
Kevin Whitney, Head of Operations at the Irish Coast Guard, commented: "Training exercises are a regular and critical factor to ensure a best-in-class emergency response. On behalf of the Irish Coast Guard, I would like to thank EirGrid for supporting our crews in carrying out these offshore exercises. This collaboration highlights the importance of partnership in strengthening maritime safety and protecting lives at sea."
The Powering Up Offshore – South Coast Programme involves developing the new infrastructure necessary to connect power generated by offshore wind farms into the national grid. Upon completion, the project will enable approximately 900 MW of electricity to be supplied from wind farms situated off the southern coast of Ireland.
