Belfast Metropolitan College has teamed up with Port Training Services (PTS) and Belfast Harbour to launch Northern Ireland's first Level 2 Port Operations Apprenticeship Framework.
Funded by the Department for the Economy, the scheme is intended to build skills across the region's expanding maritime and logistics industries.
Developed with direct employer input, the programme is delivered by Belfast Met in partnership with PTS and blends practical, on-the-job experience with classroom learning.
Its core accredited qualification is designed to equip employees with sector-relevant skills, confidence and competence, while helping port employers to boost operational efficiency, build capability, enhance safety standards and strengthen long-term workforce development.
The framework offers five specialist pathways:
• Cruise & Ferry Terminal Operations
• General Operations
• Stevedoring Operations
• Marine Operations
• and Container Operations
Available to employers at no training cost, the apprenticeship provides an accessible route to upskilling staff and supporting the continued growth of Northern Ireland's port sector.
The framework was officially launched at an event in Belfast Harbour, attended by employers and representatives from industry, education and government.
