Limerick City and County Council will host an information evening on built heritage grant schemes at 6pm on Thursday 3 September in Istabraq Hall, Merchant’s Quay.
The event will outline each scheme, explain how to apply, and share practical tips to strengthen applications. An Architectural Conservation Officer will be available after the presentation to discuss individual projects and offer tailored advice.
Three national schemes will be covered: the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, the Historic Structures Fund and Historic Thatch Buildings. They are funded by the Department through the National Built Heritage Service (NBHS) and administered locally by Limerick City and County Council. In 2026, the Council received €539,888.55 across the three programmes, and applications for 2027 are now open.
The grants are available to owners or custodians of historic buildings, including Protected Structures, properties within Architectural Conservation Areas, and vernacular buildings. Owners, relevant custodians and community groups are encouraged to attend to better understand the supports and how to apply.
Mayor of Limerick John Moran said: “Limerick's historic buildings are an important part of our identity, telling the story of our city, towns and villages and the people who have shaped them over generations. These grant schemes provide valuable support for owners and custodians to protect and enhance our built heritage, ensuring these unique structures can continue to be enjoyed by future generations. I would encourage anyone with an interest in preserving a historic building to attend this information evening and learn more about the funding opportunities available.”
Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Tom Ruddle, added: "Investment in our historic buildings is an investment in the future of Limerick. Conserving and restoring heritage properties helps to enhance our towns and villages, supports regeneration, and ensures that these important landmarks remain a vibrant part of community life. This information evening is an excellent opportunity to learn about the funding available and how it can help bring conservation projects to life."
Director General at Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, said: “These grants are a really important tool for us to support owners and custodians of historic buildings to carry out the necessary maintenance and repair works to ensure the ongoing protection of their building. We are hosting this information evening to demystify the application process, and empowering applicants to put their best foot forward in their application. We hope that this will lead to a higher quality of application, and consequently a higher success rate for applicants in Limerick.”
