Homes and businesses in Old Greenfield, Maynooth, are now enjoying a steadier and more dependable water service following the completion of key improvements to the local network by Uisce Éireann. The works are designed to support everyday life in the area, from morning cups of tea to running shops and keeping community services operating smoothly with clean, reliable water.

As part of the scheme, Uisce Éireann laid more than 650 metres of new water mains and carried out 69 public lead service replacements in Old Greenfield, modernising the network and strengthening its resilience for the years ahead.

In many older estates, water connections made of iron or lead were installed behind houses and are known as backyard service connections. Their age and condition can make them a major source of leaks. Because these services are often shared and run through neighbouring gardens, leaks are harder to find and fix. Shared connections also mean bursts can affect multiple households and lead to low pressure across a neighbourhood.

Replacing these legacy connections is expected to enhance performance across the network, cut the risk of bursts and leaks, and provide a more reliable supply for local residents and businesses.

Nicola Butler, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "These upgrades are an important part of delivering a water service built to last. By replacing ageing pipes and backyard service connections with modern, resilient infrastructure, we're improving water services today while strengthening resilience for the future.

"The replacement of these older connections will help reduce leakage, improve network performance and deliver a more reliable supply for customers. We're grateful to the local community for their patience and support while these essential upgrades were carried out."

The project forms part of Uisce Éireann's wider drive to reduce leakage nationwide. With more than 65,000 kilometres of underground water mains — enough to circle the Earth one and a half times — tracking down and repairing hidden leaks is challenging, but progress continues. National leakage has fallen to its lowest level on record, down from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
