A training exercise to deploy temporary defences that complement the permanent Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme will take place from 14 to 18 September 2026.

Led by the Department for Infrastructure, working with multi-agency partners, the drill aims to minimise disruption while familiarising staff with equipment and rehearsing emergency response procedures. A full test was carried out last year, and each annual exercise focuses on a different section of the scheme.

The £33 million scheme, completed in 2025, provides enhanced protection from tidal flooding for more than 3,000 homes and businesses in Belfast and has been designed with climate change projections to 2080 in mind.

This year's activity will cover the Harbour Estate; Sydenham (Greggs Quay to The O2 Belfast); Sydenham (Pottinger's Quay); and Ravenhill.

As part of the exercise, the slip road from Ravenhill Road to the Albert Bridge will be closed overnight between 11pm and 6am on Wednesday 16 September. If required, the same overnight closure may also be in place on Thursday 17 September. Diversions will direct city centre-bound traffic via Bridge End and Queen's Bridge.

There may also be short-term disruption and temporary footpath closures at other locations, with advisory signs provided where necessary, including along the towpath.
