NI Water will close a section of Newry Road between Aughnagon Road and Edenmore Road from 9.30am to 4.00pm daily for up to five days from Monday 14 September to carry out ground investigations linked to the new Aughnagon Water Booster Pumping Station.

The utility will undertake site investigations on Newry Road, Mayobridge, in preparation for connecting the new booster pumping station currently being built nearby later this year.

To facilitate the works, Newry Road will be shut to through traffic each day between 9.30am and 4.00pm on the stretch between its junctions with Aughnagon Road and Edenmore Road. The programme is due to begin on Monday 14 September and is expected to last up to five days.

Speaking about the work, Zama Dilworth, NI Water Project Manager, said: "This ground investigation work is an essential step in designing connections for the new Aughnagon Water Booster Pumping Station which is currently under construction off the Newry Road. The new station will enhance the water supply network and improve performance for homes and businesses in Mayobridge.

"The closure will be in place from 9.30am to 4.00pm each day with an approved diversion route signposted via Chapel Hill and Derryleckagh Road. During these hours, access to all business and residential properties will be available from each side of the contractor's working area. Outside of these hours, the road will be open to traffic, although some traffic management may remain in place. The project team will advise if any changes will be made to local bus services once they have been confirmed with Translink.

"Looking ahead, we are hoping to programme the final connections and required traffic management to coincide with the Halloween school break. NI Water and our project team from GEDA and WSP thank residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out.

"Once commissioned later this year the new Aughnagon Water Booster Pumping Station will provide a more reliable supply for homes and businesses in Mayobridge and the surrounding area. The investment forms part of NI Water's Aughnagon Drought Alleviation Programme, being delivered by our Clean Water Base Maintenance Team which aims to improve the security and resilience of water supplies across the Newry area. This will be done through upgrades at Camlough Water Pumping Station, Aughnagon Service Reservoir and Carnbane Water Pumping Station. The scheme will enhance network flexibility, improve operational reliability and help safeguard water supplies during periods of increased demand and drought conditions."
