Customers in Maryville, Castlecomer are set to benefit from better water quality and a more dependable supply as Uisce Éireann advances essential upgrades to remove ageing backyard water service connections.

The scheme includes installing almost 600 metres of new watermain and replacing outdated backyard service connections. The works aim to improve water quality, curb leakage and deliver a steadier supply for households in the area.

In many older estates across Ireland, water connections—often made of iron or lead—were historically laid to the rear of properties and shared between neighbours. Because of age-related deterioration, these 'backyard' services can be a major source of leakage. Shared pipes running through adjoining properties make faults harder to locate and repair, and bursts can affect several homes at once, causing low water pressure.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "These works will help provide a more reliable water supply for customers in Maryville by replacing ageing backyard service connections and reducing leakage on the network."

Work is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to finish later this year. Affected customers will be contacted directly about surveys and connection arrangements. The project will be delivered by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
