Construction of the 42-bed extension at Sligo University Hospital (SUH) is advancing, increasing bed capacity and supporting the hospital’s plans for future clinical services.

From today, 21st September, the main public entrance to SUH will be temporarily moved to facilitate ongoing construction. The temporary entrance, close to the existing entrance on the Mall, is expected to be in place for approximately 12–14 weeks.

Work on the new facility began in Q2 2025. The 42-bed block, an interim capacity boost ahead of the longer-term Multi-Service Block, is now entering its next phase, including foundation works.

The development comprises two 21-bed wards with single en‑suite rooms and supporting ancillary accommodation, providing 42 additional inpatient beds. This will enhance patient privacy, comfort and infection control, while helping to address current capacity pressures at SUH.

In addition, a shell-and-core area has been included to enable future development of a Cardiology CT unit and an expanded Day Oncology Services area, allowing phased service enhancements without major infrastructure works later.

The temporary entrance is located towards the Hospice side of the hospital on the Mall, about 25 metres from the current entrance, also known as the Renal entrance. Patients can use this entrance to access the Outpatients Department Clinics, Day Services and the wards. Emergency presentations should continue to use the Emergency Department entrance.

Clear signage will be in place on site to assist patients and visitors. Information and directions about the temporary entrance will also be included in patients’ appointment letters to help plan journeys in advance. The hospital shuttle bus will continue to operate between the public car park and the new main entrance.
