Waterford City and County Council has signed a construction contract with Conor Phelan Construction to start work on a new state-of-the-art Water Sports Facility on Tramore's Prom in Co. Waterford.

Delivered by the Council under Fáilte Ireland’s Platforms for Growth Scheme, the project will feature hot and cold showers, a Changing Places toilet, an induction space and storage for beach wheelchairs. It also includes an upgrade of the existing public toilet facilities on the Prom.

The Tramore Beach facilities are designed to serve water sports users and the wider community throughout the year in the popular seaside town, which retained its Blue Flag in 2026 and was newly added to the list of Green Coast Award recipients.

The addition of the hub is expected to further boost Tramore's profile within Ireland’s Ancient East, offering improved support for activities such as kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding and sea swimming.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil, said: "Tramore is renowned for its five kilometres of sandy beaches, clear waters, dunes and cliff walks. While it has a wide appeal to the local community and visitors alike, the provision of these facilities is one that will strengthen the appeal of Tramore as an activity hotspot for water sports enthusiasts from the four corners of Ireland throughout the year."

Seán McKeown, Chief Executive of Waterford City and County Council, welcomed the milestone, and said: "The delivery of this new centre will bring a multitude of benefits to Tramore and the surrounding areas, as opportunities arise for activity operators and create additional jobs and economic growth in the locality.

"The funding support from Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media is instrumental in copper fastening Waterford's position as one of the leading destinations for water-based activities."

The project forms part of Fáilte Ireland’s Platforms for Growth Scheme, funded through the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 strategy. The programme targets high-impact initiatives that can grow tourism nationwide and enhance activity infrastructure in line with Fáilte Ireland’s Corporate Strategy, including its Outdoor Ireland programme. It aims to build on Ireland’s strengths in outdoor experiences, give people compelling reasons to travel, encourage longer stays and increase visitor spend.
