The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Wexford County Council’s application for support under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, allocating €566,666 (excluding VAT) for coastal defence works at Kelly's Resort Hotel in Rosslare.

Announcing the decision, Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran said the funding will deliver rock revetment coastal protection fronting the hotel on the Wexford coast.

The OPW's Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, introduced in 2009, provides funding to local authorities for small-scale flood mitigation works or studies that address localised flooding and coastal protection issues where solutions can be identified and implemented quickly. Since its inception, 26 applications from Wexford County Council have been supported under the scheme.

Works that are ordinarily the responsibility of local authorities are generally not considered for OPW funding; however, partial funding may be provided where such works also reduce the risk of flooding to properties. Local authorities must be satisfied that any proposed works will not significantly increase flood risk elsewhere.
