Uisce Éireann and South Dublin County Council have confirmed that the road closure currently in effect on the R405 Hazelhatch Road will be extended until Friday, 15 January 2027.

The additional time is required to complete essential upgrades to water, surface water and telecommunications infrastructure along the route.

The scheme includes replacing ageing water mains for Uisce Éireann, alongside installation of a new surface water pipeline and telecommunications ducting on behalf of South Dublin County Council.

Delivering all three utilities through one coordinated programme is designed to be more efficient and less disruptive than undertaking the works separately, which would otherwise trigger further construction activity and extra closures.

As work has progressed, unforeseen ground conditions have impacted the delivery schedule, prompting the need for an extension.

Significant progress has been achieved to date: 1,500 metres of water main have been renewed, 1,250 metres of surface water pipeline installed, and 950 metres of telecommunications ducting completed.

On completion, the project will enhance reliability for households and businesses by reducing leakage, improving water pressure and cutting the frequency of bursts. The new infrastructure will also support planned development in Newcastle and Celbridge, including approximately 3,500 new homes across three sites.

Uisce Éireann’s Mark O’Duffy, said: "We recognise the impact that the ongoing closure is having on residents, businesses and road users, and we apologise for the continued disruption. We are engaging with local residents and businesses to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

"Progress has been made across the water, stormwater and telecommunications elements of the project. However, unexpected ground conditions have affected the overall delivery programme, and additional time is now required to complete the remaining works.

"We will continue to work closely with South Dublin County Council and our delivery partner to complete the works as efficiently and safely as possible."

The closure extends from the junction of the R405 Hazelhatch Road with Loughtown Road to the junction with Athgoe Road.

A signposted diversion will stay in place. Access for local residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained, and works may be paused over the Christmas and New Year period.
