Families and residents on Parnell Avenue, Enniscorthy can expect a stronger, more dependable water supply as Uisce Éireann finalises upgrade works under its national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Across many older estates, backyard service connections made of iron or lead were installed to the rear of homes and often shared between neighbours. As these lines age, they become a significant source of leakage and are difficult to locate and repair. Because multiple properties can share the same connection, bursts and leaks can impact entire rows of homes, frequently causing low pressure.

In Parnell Avenue, the project involved decommissioning the ageing backyard mains and laying more than 179 metres of modern water mains along the public road. Customers also received new individual service connections. These upgrades will help improve water quality, reduce leakage and provide a more reliable supply for households in the area.

Dave Murphy of Uisce Éireann said: "This essential work is part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to improve the water network across the country, prioritising investment where it is needed most, enabling these communities to thrive. We would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience during these works, which involved accessing their properties."

With over 65,000 km of underground pipes nationwide — enough to circle the globe one and a half times — finding and fixing leaks can be complex. Nonetheless, national leakage is at its lowest on record, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
