Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced the start of an £816,000 carriageway resurfacing programme on Ballyrobin Road, Killead.
The scheme covers approximately two kilometres, stretching from the A26 Killead Roundabout to the A57 Airport Roundabout.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Antrim area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
"This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of residents, businesses and those travelling in the Antrim area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 30 October 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To facilitate safe delivery, the following traffic management will be in place: Monday 28 September to Friday 1 October 2026, a lane closure from 9.30am to 4.30pm with temporary traffic signals; Monday 5 to Friday 9 October, Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, and Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2026, full overnight road closures between 7pm and 6am from the Airport Roundabout to the Killead Roundabout; and Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026, a daytime lane closure from 9.30am to 4.30pm with temporary signals.
During closures, a signed diversion will route traffic approaching the airport from Killead Roundabout via A26 Oldstone Road / A6 Belfast Road / A6 Belmont Road / A57 Dublin Road. A separate HGV diversion will be signed via A57 Ballyrobin Road / A6 Antrim and Belfast Road / A6 Belmont Road / A57 Dublin Road to avoid the low bridge on Oldstone Road.
The Department has programmed operations and traffic management to minimise disruption. While local access and Translink bus and school services will be accommodated where possible, road users should allow extra time, expect some delays—particularly for airport journeys—and comply with all temporary restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather, the works are due to be substantially complete by Friday 30 October 2026. The Department will update the public on any changes. Further information is available at TrafficwatchNI.
