Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran TD has announced €1.077 million for studies and interim flood mitigation works in Mogeely, Castlemartyr, Rathcormac and Ballintubber.
The funding is being provided through the Office of Public Works’ (OPW) revised Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
The Minister said: "The allocation today is an example of how the revised Minor Works Scheme, which I announced in May this year, is delivering mitigation measures to at risk communities pending a flood relief scheme being completed for their communities.” He added that the allocation is in addition to the €1.35 million already directed to flood mitigation across East Cork, including Killeagh, Youghal and Whitegate, under the same scheme.
"The announcement is part of an overall €14m allocation to Midleton and East Cork, demonstrating the Government's commitment to addressing and mitigating the flood risk in this region, following Storm Babet three years ago.
"I know and have seen first-hand the devastation that flooding causes to people, businesses and communities. Speaking following a meeting with the elected representatives from the East Cork region, the Minister said that the €5.8m investment will complete, in November, the delivery and installation of over 2,000 individual property protection measures to over 700 property owners impacted by Storm Babet."
A further €5.8 million is facilitating advance works in Tir Cluain, Midleton, enabling construction to commence from spring next year and providing protection for 135 properties.
On the main Midleton Flood Relief Scheme, Cork County Council — the lead authority — expects to receive the final planning, engineering and environmental assessment documents from its consultants this month. This will allow a planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála by year-end for a scheme designed to protect 750 properties, including all those impacted by Storm Babet, with substantial completion targeted for 2031.
