Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran has announced that the Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Donegal County Council’s application under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme for Inver, Co. Donegal.
Under the scheme, funding of €12,668 has been sanctioned to install a row of rock armour along the line of existing gabions, protecting them from further damage.
The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, introduced by the OPW in 2009, provides funding to local authorities for minor flood mitigation works or studies addressing localised flooding and coastal protection. It generally applies where solutions can be readily identified and delivered within a short timeframe.
Works that are normally the responsibility of local authorities are generally not eligible for OPW funding; however, the OPW may consider partial funding where such works would also reduce the risk of flooding to properties. Local authorities must be satisfied that proposed works will not significantly impact flood risk elsewhere. The commencement and progression of any approved works are matters for the relevant local authority.
Since 2009, 47 funding applications from Donegal County Council have been supported under this scheme (see www.floodinfo.ie/county-summary/). Further details, including annual lists of approved projects, are available at www.floodinfo.ie/minor-works/.
