FP McCann Launches Fully Lockable D400 Composite Trench Cover

Construction News Image

Positioned as a lighter, safer alternative to traditional steel or concrete lids, the GRP-based covers target applications in power networks, utilities, transport schemes and data centres, where physical protection and dependable access are essential.

Developed in collaboration with composite access specialist Fibergate, ThruBeam D400 combines advanced Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) with the strength and resilience required for demanding sites. The system is designed to bolster security, improve on-site handling and streamline installation and maintenance for long-term reliability.

A key feature is its fully lockable design, which helps deter unauthorised access to critical assets while maintaining safe, efficient access for authorised personnel.

Grant Hann, Global Product Manager, Fibergate, said: "Our partnership with FP McCann has resulted in a composite trench cover solution that combines the advantages of lightweight GRP technology with the robust performance required for infrastructure applications. We're proud to have contributed to a product that improves safety, handling and whole-life performance for end users."

Engineered to integrate with the FP McCann Cable Troughing range, ThruBeam D400 addresses evolving project needs where security, durability and operational efficiency are paramount.

The system tackles long-standing handling challenges associated with heavy steel or concrete covers by offering a high strength-to-weight ratio. This reduces manual handling risks, can cut labour requirements and enables easier inspection and maintenance throughout the asset lifecycle.

Built for harsh environments, the composite construction provides strong resistance to corrosion and chemical attack, offering a durable alternative to steel solutions that can deteriorate over time. The non-conductive, non-sparking material supports safety in power, utility and industrial settings, while the cover surface achieves a PTV 44 slip resistance rating to improve footing in varied site conditions.

As investment accelerates in power grids, transport infrastructure and large-scale data centres, demand is rising for products that combine durability, simpler installation and enhanced physical security. ThruBeam D400's fully lockable design supports wider site security strategies by protecting access points linked to power distribution and underground services.

Katie McGorty, National Sales Director, FP McCann, said: "The launch of the ThruBeam D400 range represents another step forward in our commitment to delivering innovative infrastructure solutions that respond directly to the needs of our customers. By combining D400-rated performance with the benefits of advanced composite materials, we're providing a solution that enhances safety, simplifies installation and delivers long-term durability. Importantly, as the only fully lockable D400 composite trench cover currently available on the market, ThruBeam offers an added level of security for critical infrastructure applications where asset protection is paramount."

FP McCann says the launch underscores its focus on solutions that improve safety, efficiency, security and whole-life performance across critical sectors. For more details on the ThruBeam D400 Composite Trench Cover range, visit fpmccann.co.uk/portfolio-items/thrubeam-composite-trench-covers/
