Uisce Éireann is set to replace ageing water mains on Farraghroe Road in Co Longford to improve reliability, curb leaks and underpin future development in Farraghroe and Edgeworthstown.
Works will begin in early October, with more than 5.3 kilometres of modern piping to be laid from the L1050 Killoe Glebe junction along the Farraghroe Road to the Glennagh junction with the L1090/L1088. The upgrade is designed to strengthen the local network, reduce unplanned outages for homes and businesses, and support sustainable growth.
The existing mains have been susceptible to bursts and leaks, leading to service interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water. Welcoming the scheme, Dave Murphy of Uisce Éireann said the investment will cut leakage and give local communities greater confidence in their supply for the long term. "Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Farraghroe and Edgeworthstown now and for generations to come."
As part of the project, new individual service connections will be installed from the public main in the roadway to customers' property boundaries and then linked to their supply. Shareridge Ltd will deliver the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in Spring 2027.
To safeguard crews and the public, traffic management will be in place. A road closure is scheduled on the Farraghroe Road from Monday 5 October 2026 until Monday 16 November 2026, with a clearly signposted diversion. Access for local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times. Uisce Éireann says it will keep disruption to a minimum.
