Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy, joined Minister for Transport and Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD, to mark the start of the New Street Public Realm Enhancement Project, a major step in reshaping the heart of Malahide village.
The scheme aims to enrich one of Malahide's key civic spaces, creating a high-quality setting for residents, traders and visitors. It is designed to prioritise people while balancing the needs of all users, supporting the area’s continued vitality.
New Street, located at The Diamond, has operated as a pedestrianised space since 2020. Building on that success, Fingal County Council’s public realm plan complements the recently improved Village Green to create a more cohesive village centre.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy said: "The commencement of works on New Street marks an exciting moment for Malahide. This project will transform the heart of the village into an even more welcoming and attractive destination, creating a vibrant civic space where residents and visitors can meet, relax and enjoy everything Malahide has to offer."
The works will deliver accessible pedestrian surfaces, enhanced public lighting, additional seating, cycle parking and space for outdoor dining, alongside new landscaping. Features also include the planting of 37 trees, sustainable urban drainage measures, upgraded water and drainage infrastructure, loading bays and an accessible parking space.
Fingal County Council has appointed Maylim Limited to deliver the scheme. Construction is due to commence in the coming weeks and is expected to take approximately 16 months, with carefully phased activity and planned breaks during the peak summer and Christmas periods to reduce impacts.
Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: "The New Street Public Realm Enhancement Project reflects Fingal County Council's commitment to delivering attractive, people-focused public spaces. This scheme will build on the success of the pedestrianisation project and strengthen Malahide's unique character for generations to come."
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and access to homes and businesses will remain in place throughout. A dedicated business liaison officer will engage directly with local businesses and property owners as the project progresses.
The improvements also support Malahide's role at the centre of Fingal’s proposed greenway network, with future links to the Broadmeadow Way and the Sutton to Malahide Greenway set to enhance active travel options.
